Richmond, Virginia – Allen & Allen, a Richmond-based personal injury law firm, announced today that shareholder Derrick L. Walker has been selected for induction into the International Academy of Trial Lawyers, an invitation-only organization recognized as one of the most exclusive honors available to trial attorneys.
Established in 1954, the Academy is regarded as a leading professional association for trial lawyers worldwide, with a stated mission centered on advocacy skill, ethical practice and legal reform. Its membership is capped at 500 active trial lawyers in the United States, along with roughly 150 international Fellows across 30 countries. Members include attorneys who represent both plaintiffs and defendants in civil litigation, as well as prosecutors and criminal defense lawyers.
Unlike many professional honors, membership in the Academy cannot be sought by application. Candidates are nominated by existing members and then undergo a vetting process that typically lasts about a year, including confidential interviews with opposing counsel, judges and current Fellows.
Walker is scheduled to be formally inducted at the Academy’s next meeting in March 2027. He has practiced law for over 25 years, with a caseload concentrated in wrongful death, tractor-trailer collision, traumatic brain injury, nursing home negligence and medical malpractice matters, resulting in a number of multi-million-dollar client outcomes.
Walker holds an AV Preeminent rating from Martindale-Hubbell, has been recognized as a Virginia Super Lawyer. He has also appeared in The Best Lawyers in America® listing every year since 2017, including “Lawyer of the Year” recognition in both personal injury litigation and medical malpractice.
Walker’s involvement in the legal profession extends beyond his own practice. He previously served as President of the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association and has spent three years on the Executive Committee of the American Association for Justice, where he currently holds the position of Secretary.
“Admission to the Academy is considered by many to be a defining moment in a trial lawyer’s career,” said Jason Konvicka, President of Allen & Allen. “Congratulations, Derrick. This recognition is well deserved.”
Walker credited his colleagues for contributing to the recognition. “Whatever success I’ve had as a lawyer that has paved the way for this recognition has been shaped in no small part by the people I’ve had the privilege of working alongside throughout my career,” Walker said. “I’m fortunate to practice with talented lawyers who challenge and inspire me, and to be supported every day by the members of The Allen Law Firm — an exceptional group of professionals — who make our work possible.”
